Default Holy smoke "Griffiths Gnat"

Fished today for a 2-3hrs 2pm-4.30pm, bright sunshine, strong winds. Fish were feeding from the surface on what i dont know. I tried cdc emergers, f-flys, small foam beetles nothing. I put a Griffiths gnat on and alomost every cast resulted in action. Out of curiostity i tried another cdc emerger and nothing. Back to the Griffiths gnat and it was game straight back on first cast.

I have always over looked the Griffiths gnat in favour of cdc emergers and klinkhammers, just goes to show I guess.

Might be worth if nothing is happening try the Griffiths gnat in various sizes if other drys are failing. Cant wait for a full days fishing tomorrow.

Regards
G

Hi GR73

Thanks for the info. I will definately try a GG on my next outing. I'm just about to give up fishing I've had the most frustrating week of my fishing life. I've been out in the high winds and bright sunlight, boat and bank fishing, watching fish rising and failing to hook up. I've been today and thrown the fly box at rising trout but they were just not interesed.
I'll let you know if it works for me.

Funny that, I sat and tied half a dozen last night for use this weekend, along with six damsels of varying pattern. I fished on Sunday and only had any luck with the damsel.

Funny thing was when someone asked what I was catching on I told him a may fly nymph and stuck a damsel under his nose. Must be my age........

No good getting despondent at this time of year, it’s always hard going in these conditions. Then again I’m not far from Great Harwood and we can’t say this area is exactly chalk stream country can we........

Today from the bank I used a 9ft sonik sk4 5-6wt a leeda profil 9ft tapered mono 7lb leader onto a riverge silver ring and a 6ft length of 6.5lb stroft ABR 0.160dia.

The connection from the fly line to tapered leader was a made via a line needle, the leeda profile and riverge ring was greased with muciline line grease and the 6ft of stroft was degreased with mucilin line sinkant.

Add on a size 14 Griffiths gnat and it worked a treat. Strage who such a simple setup delivered all the fun.

A Griffiths Gnat is my favourite standby fly on our reservoir when I'm not sure what the fish are taking, or when they're being finicky.

I fish different sizes, according to the ripple, using size 20s in flat calms. They're a must have fly in my flybox.

The same thing's been happening to me, and a mate, at different venues. It's only a theory but ... I reckon the trout are actually missing the flies in the bright sunlight.

Had a great day catching very small Rudd on size 22 GG's last year. Hard part was setting the hook as the fish were averaging less than three inches and it was lightning quick rises on a small stream. Like Tommy Ruffe they're a must have in my fly box.

Take care

Terry
