Hi Russell,
your lines seem spot on for this month, either or all should work well with a team of buzzers.

Buzzers/nymphs are not fast creatures and only head up to the surface slowly, in little bursts then stop, and continue upwards so your nymphs and buzzers want to be 'almost' static to fished very slowly, figure of eight or slow retrieve usually works well, start with some size 10 or 12 flies, if the fish are fussy drop down to a 12 14, and if there's still nothing doing, think about a change of colours, black or olive are usually good choices, all the best and most importantly enjoy your surroundings, and try to speak to other anglers, they will usually tell you how they are catching and what with.

Regards
Jim

Russell

Welcome to the Forum

Your lines sound perfect albeit the floater may be your most used line for smallwaters which tend to be, on avr, from 7ft - 18ft deep at max. Hence a floating line and long leader can still reach most of the deeper places.

If you are not confident in your casting capabilities with multiple flies then stick with one. There are many arguments for using one to two flies max on a smallwater where the fish see alot of flies whizzing around their heads..........

A nice rig to use is something like a leader of 6ft of 8lb line, 5ft of 6lb line and a final 4ft of 5lb line. To this you can tie a single fly such as a gold head damsel or an Apps Bloodworm.

Cast this out, let if sink for a wee while and then very slowly tweak it back with the odd slow pull to get up a little bit in the water column.

If you are comfortable casting two flies then have at least 5ft between them on smaller stillwaters............unless you are fishing under the bung but that is a WHOLE different story and not one to ask about on here unless you have a very thick skin.

Or a sinking line, short leader and a booby........still 'thick skin' territory but not as bad as bung territory

As said by someone earlier talk to other anglers and also don't be afraid to abmit that you are learning. I remember years ago fishing a small still water and was a bit annoyed when an old chap pushed in between me and the next angler as I thought he was a bit close to me. I had caught a few trout on mini lures but he was an expert with the buzzer - it was great to watch him take fish after fish over the next few hours (I am talking 25 + fish when no one else was catching much) constantly changing tactics to respond to the fish feeding at different depths. He gave me loads of advice and I learnt so much from watching and talking to him. As with most types of fishing it is all about having confidence and learning from experience but it does take a bit of time.

Russell,
Get out there and give it a go. Best way to learn is by jumping in!
