I'm sure some people who do use them will give him the benefit of their experience, and those who don't believe in using them will recognise that they've nothing to add to this thread...

Terry
There area number of different types:- Nylon wool tied on a hook which also acts as a lure, moulding putty in bright colours, neon plasters, small floats, split or not split.and some that twist on the line. I've probably missed some out but I'm sure someone out there will tell me.

My personal preference is a small float called a Fish Pimp,it comes in bright fluorescent colours and is easy to put on the line.

Some indicators are not so easy to put on or take off.

So there you are it boils down to personal choice.

You will find out that there is a lot of hostile feelings about the use of bite indicators.

Hi Terry this is a real can of worms to open prepare to be shot down some people on here HATE the idea of indicators but my preference is the fish pimp type throw away the stupid elastic in the slot and use a piece of cocktail stick you will require some small pliers to remove these as they will swell with the water the peg only needs to be long enough for it to hold the fish pimp on,then all it takes is to experiment with the depth; now we both need to keep our heads down (sorry Stuart) Noel.

Well Westcountry you coment is to say the least norrow minded in my opinion.
The is a place for bite indicators and I don't meen in a bin. Used correctly they are a valuable tool in a trout fishermans armory.
I'll make a wild guess and say you're probably not a booby man either.
The wonderful thing about fly fishing is its diversity. As long as best fishing practice is followed use a Pimp and lets all live and let live.

John Tyzack, possibly the best river fisherman around (IMO) uses indicators, so as I've said before:

If they're good enough for a 6 times national river champion I'm sure they're good enough for the pleasure angler.
