Default Time For Nymphs

This is my second full season fly fishing and have found that when i go fishing i mainly stick to lures and have done well! however, i'd like to start using nymphs a bit more just to vary my fishing. Would appreciate any good tips anyone has to help me on my way, many thanks, ian

Ian,
You can't fish a nymph (or buzzer) too slow - just twitch them.
Goldhead nymphs will help you fish deeper. There aren't too many nymphs you need - just GRHEs, PTNs, Diawl Bachs and a Damsel Nymph (not with a big marabou tail!)

I have found you get a better stamp of fish on nymphs compared to lures

Chris

Ian,
Next time you take a trout for the table and you gut it, cut open the stomach and see what it has been feeding on - you won't see many lure sized items in there (apart from at the back end of the season when they're feeding on fry), but it will be mostly made up of small food items - that should remove any doubt as to whether they see small items

Chris

Ian,

When you're fishing with buzzers/diawl bachs, find an area with a nice cross wind, cast your flies across and slightly down wind and simply let the breeze fish the flies for you. All you need to do is retrieve line so as to keep in touch with the flies as they come round. If you think the wind is bringing them round too fast, either change to a goldhead buzzer on the point or "mend" the line by throwing a bit of line at the rod tip upwind. As for leader length, go as long as you can comfortably cast, with around 6 foot between flies (again, if you are comfortable fishing more than one fly). Takes vary from little plucks, to the line simply tightening, to the rod being almost pulled out of your hand. Very exciting and rewarding way to fish imo.

Cheers

Mat

My son -in- law had the same problem as yourself. He now fishes buzzers & small stuff with confidence. Thats mostly what its down to, having the confidence to try something new. Chris is right, spoon the fish to see what its feeding on. But never spoon a fish that your returning to the water. Through trial & error it will come to you. Tight lines.
