Lakedown Trout Fishery
Had a great days fishing at this jewel of a trout fishery with stunning scenery. The fishing was not easy, I managed to bag 2 fish both just over 2.5lbs (rainbows) and unfortunately did not manage to hook into any of the resident wild or stocked brownies, there is always next time though.
They have fantastic facilities there, a nice lodge (to big to call it hut) which has cooking facilities not to mention free tea and coffee. Ted, who is a super friendly chap and has plenty of advice (worth taking trust me if you have not fished there before), pointed me in the right direction and the advice was Gold head blue flash damsels (GHBFD) fished deep. Thanks to this advice I got my 1st fish on the 2nd cast of the day. Nervous I might end up catching my limit too quickly I then decided to switch flies and see if I could have any luck with something else. There was an ubandance of natural food source wizzing around, sedges, hawthorn flies. The fish were rising but no matter what I tried the only fish that seemed to have any interest in the dries were the tiny fry that were in abundance too.
Towards the end of the day I switched back to the damsel and again 2nd cast was back into another hard fighting stockie taken about 3 feet from the bank on Lake 1.
I do recommend a trip down to this fishery. I also got meet some friendly people and will hopefully be going salt water fly fishing for bass with one of them in September/October.
I do have one question, is there really any need for any other fly than the GHBFD when fishing small still waters? Everyone I ever fish this is the recommended fly, although at other locations I tend to have more success with other patterns too.
