Default What is considered to be the length an average angler can cast?

The reason for the above question above is that I lost twenty feet of a Di5 line in a competition. It got tangled around the outboard prop.

The line started life as 82' and is now 62'. It's not tapered so I can join another line to it. Would you consider it necessary to add 20' to the back end in order to cover long casts wind assisted?

Your thoughts lads/lassies would be appreciated.

Thanks

Black Knight

usually about 20' less than they believe

you need to consider if your 62' is long enough for you not everyone else surely.

that would depend on the ability of the angler ,i would estimate approx upto 20-25 yds ???

Probably not even that Bruce1.
Some of the casting I have seen would make you weep!

Sorry lads I didn't include enough info. Firstly, I'm a less than average distance caster compared to my angling friends.

I used a WF Di5 so I may have lost line slightly thicker than the rest. Some sinking lines have little or no taper.

I've never measured my cast, with or without wind assistance, but it may be the simplest way to answer my own question.

How would you join another piece of fly line to the remaining section? I'm not sure that this can be done effectively. I would say that your line is trashed, unless I am misunderstanding the question.

If it's the trailing end of the fly line (running line), then you can just keep fishing it. If it is the front end with the WF taper then you'll probably need a new line. BTW GAC are selling 8wt Di5 for £18.99.

You could use a roman moser shooting head connection kit.

Hi Andreb

I would try to effect a repair at the reel end attaching twenty foot of similar line with a braided leader super glued at each end. It's a method I tried before and it does work but only on fast sink non tapered lines.
