Default Keeping your catch cool and fresh

You've caught a big fish, that you intend to keep, you need to keep it cool/refrigerated/frozen but are out in the sticks and wont be heading home for a few days, and cool bag wont do or last long enough. You have your car with you. What's the lowest cost/best way to keep your catch cool/fresh/frozen? Are there any good portabile coolers you can buy and run off 12v car supply that are low in price? Failing that other alternatives? Commercial services that can freeze/store it for you even deliver to your home address at a later date or straight away via refrigerated/frozen service? The only other thing I can think of other than eating it all there and then would be salting it but that would defeat a lot of the purpose. Ideas?

I have one of these Scierra padded and insulated bass bags. I suppose if you added one of those ice blocks it would keep it fresh all day.

Fish kept in bass bag placed in cold water (lake or river) then placed in cool/freezer bag (simular to Sharkey's) with freezer block. You can get 12v mini fridges type that you can keep cans cool. Best to check out camping and caravan accessories stores.

I have this coolbox which I use when travelling to/from my caravan for keeping refrigerated stuff cool. It plugs into the car cigarette lighter/accessory socket and works very well, even when I'm parked for a while in hot weather.

Was looking at the 12v cooler box but how much does it affect your battery if you leave it on for 24hrs or more please

I have a 12v cooler that I keep in the back of my Jeep in summer,.. useful for picnics, carrying home shopping,..always got a cold drink during the day, a good investment is that's what you want.
I use freezer packs, but run the fridge off an ignition -fed outlet, cos it will kill your battery PDQ otherwise.
Hope that helps.

if its something you are going to use regularly it might be worth getting a leisure battery to power the fridge. The one in my caravan can be re charged when the car engine is running

all the best Nick

I've never had to leave it that long. A couple of hours at the most without the engine running. Once the inside is cold it takes a while to heat up as long as you keep the lid on it, packing the space around it with your spare clothes and bags will help to keep it cooler longer to, so you don't have to keep it plugged in all the time. Just run the engine or go for a short run to charge the battery occasionally if you do.

Your requirement is to keep a large fish fresh for a few days?

By definition not strictly possible, but if you are indeed out in the sticks, I'd forget 12v only options unless you have shares in a leisure battery business.

There are "natural" options involving running water or digging holes/shelter etc but an easy option is to use a portable 3way fridge
(=mains/12v/gas).
When travelling, run it off your car.
When stopped eg to fish, put it in the shade and run it off a large size 907 camping gaz bottle - should run best part of a week off a full one.
When at a hotel etc run it off mains

Check out brands such a Waeco: http://www.mobilegas.co.uk/mobilecoo.../combicool.htm

I have one for camping and never looked back.
