Default Rod Sizes

HI

I am new to fly fishing and i am using a 9'10 #8 rod, seems to be fine when i was fishing from a boat at the weekend.

But my question is in what situations would you use a different size or weighted rod..or is it just personnal choice

Cheers sorry if this is a bit of a basic question

I would use this size of rod for boat fishing,Seatrout/salmon fishing.In a perfect world I would use a 9' 5 or 6# rod for wee browns/bank fishing/riverfishing.

Your 9' 10" #8 weight rod is good for most stillwater fishing. As Jim says for rivers and very small stillwater shorter and lighter weight rods are required.
