Default why did i struggle

hi guys fished derwent res at weekend on my #5 rod and line with lures casting was going great wiyhout any probs.
went down river last nite small dry casting fell to bits do you think its purely because i didnt have a heavier fly on should it make that much difference.
i am using a top quality line.
am off out to try again maybe i just had a bad nite.
or maybe i should go back to #7.

Mornin'! I know exactly what you mean. Last session went great, good casts/presentation. Next sesh back to square one. I've even had it fall apart during a sesh. You start analysing everything, questioning all the phases and you end up with "paralysis by analysis" I'm using different set ups at the minute between rivers and stills and I'm experiencing the same. Funny though, when I revert back to my little 7' 3# with a 4# dtf it all seems to come back It's got be about practice and technique; I've promised myself some tuition; not just casting but making up leaders and casts to get the best, balanced results. Good luck bud......we'll crack on whippin up some foam!!!

Maybe you were casting further on the ressie and therefore there was more line out of the rod to allow it to work better for you. You could have been trying to cast on the river with just the front taper.

Just a thought

Wind direction and strength can also affect casting.

With the wind in one direction and/or strength, it can be very forgiving/helpful despite casting faults, from another direction/strength it can be punishing/and very unhelpful as far as pulling your casting to pieces, even if the wind difference is slight.

I know!

Moving around a lake, where you are experiencing wind from different directions, sometimes attenuated by trees etc, you soon begin to realise what a significant factor it can be, especially if you are still trying to get to grips with making a perfect cast every time.

It just seems odd that the fish are always feeding best in the place where the wind isn't right!

(And for wind read 'slight breeze' as well)

When you starting out is more easy to cast a slighty heaver line.
The more weight the line has the more accuratly you can feel the rod load this in turn helps with your timing.

Practice practice practice.
