Default hawthorn fly

Hello and good morning, this is my first post ever so I'm quite excited to see how it all works etc. Anyway, more to the point, I'm part of a chalk stream fishing syndicate down in the south east of England. For the last week or so there have been massive Hawthorn hatches and the Brownies are absolutely nailing them. The problem is though, I can't get them to take my hawthorn patterns; they only seem to want my range of small hoppers !
Might anyone suggest a hawthorn pattern that's proved its self recently ?

Kind regards, Olaf

Hi Olaf,

If the hoppers are working, keep with them. I carry a few imitations, but these tend to be just large (size 14) F flies with long, trailing knotted pheasant tail fibre legs.

Also worth a look is Hans W's CDC & Elk crane:
Cranefly CDC&Elk

Superb pattern and always worth trying.

Rubber legs can be worth a go too, as they really move about on the water:

They may be around for only a short time, but they are good sport!

This one has moved a few fish, but am now tying some with black CDC instead of cock hackle. Will post later.

There is a pattern proven by over 400 years of use.

What is your problem with them taking the hoppers? The name?
