Question catch & release

When fishing do you have to kill the fish you catch or can you release them instead ?
As i don't eat fish so have no reason to kill any fish that i catch so why do some places insist that you kill them my local fishery is a good example of this

When taking trout, the first takeable fish above 12" must be taken. After that, anglers are permitted to catch and release.

You have to abide by the rules of the fishery you're fishing.

Rules are rules.Don't like them. Don't go there.

Thornton also does this. It means that there is a turnover of fish going in to the fishery but doesn't force you to take more fish than you know what to do with.
I'm sure you can find a neighbour who will want a fish or two

I agree with Chris... there is always somebody who will take them off your hands... i dont eat fish either... but i love the sport and quite happily dispatch those few that decide they want to come home with me... i have a list of people who will never turn down fresh line caught fish at no cost to them... for me the enjoyment is being out on the water with my thoughts... for them its eating my results!

I think that's a pretty good rule for the reasons as stated by Chris; I always Catch and release, the same as the OP; I don't eat them so why kill them. I would be happy to take one and pass it onto a colleague if it "rotates the stock" so to speak.

try your local Chinese, i take any fish that i have to kill, i fish mostly c&r, but when a compulsory catch and kill rule applies i just drop said fish into mine and hes delighted with it, no need to deal with it at all just hand it over as is, it gets me the odd free meal too!

I cannot physically bring myself to kill any fish i catch as i have been brought up to treat any fish with care and release them back to the water alive so whatever it says on the rules thats what i will continue you do

With due respect, you haven't thought this through. You can't physically bring yourself to kill a fish, but you have no problem in hooking and possibly damaging one?

i think thats a bit backwards...the fish will be in more pain having a hook tugging it by the lip? in some cases, killing it is by far the most humane option, if for example, you missed the strike and the fish swallows the fly....i prefer to fish barbless as it makes it much asier to remove the hook without damaging the fish, i do often take a fish or two home also as they make very, very good eating, especially on the barbeque!
