The other great place to catch one is where the Monnow meets the Wye as both banks of the Monnow (don't stray into the Wye) are considered to be free fishing and there's plenty of shad there.
There are probably more shad in the Wye than the Usk and those in the Severn are spread more thinly. They are called "mayfish" locally and generally arrive about the 2nd week of May, just before the main run of 2SW salmon.
