Default Frustration

Experienced a very frustrating evening tonight, fish all over the surface taking green fly and a microscopic black fly, managed three fish but it should have been a lot more but I just dont have flies the size of dots, what do you suggest in a situation like this? persist or move?

Default not easy

Try tying up some size 16-18 F flys, fish them static. I had the same problem last night. I was fishing next to another guy from the forum, Ed Ford. I tried buzzers no luck. Then Ed gave me a fly he was taking them on. It was the afore mentioned fly. It was the first time i'd met Ed, he's a really decent guy. He runs fordsflytying, you can find it on here.

I had a very frustrating day on Stocks Reservoir, Slaidburn. Fish were rising but refusing dries. I tried a wide range of dry flies including an F fly but no success.I tried suspended buzzers, buzzers, wets, nymphs, and lures. My grandson caught a RB on a lure so we spooned it. It was full of greenfly.

On Good Friday I fished at my Club fishery and rising trout refused dries. A member had a trout on the previous Wednesday that was full of small black beetles. What is the answer to problem of trout only feeding on tiny insects and seeming to ignor anything else?

In that situation you really need to match the hatch if your not getting into the fish. Which means going as small as 20-22.

i have had evening where i was fishing for big rainbows with #22 Black Gnats.

Thanks AP that sounds like good advice. I'll give it a try on my next outing.

Would tying a small body on a larger hook work? E.G a small body on a size 18. instead of using a size 22?

Hi Bill

This sounds like a good idea. We need some expert on micro flies to confirm the pattern would work.

I've been fishing today and fish are ignoring everthing except very small black PTN's.

I'm fishing a comp at Stocks on Friday and it would be useful to know if your idea would work so I could tie up a few to try on the fickle trout there.

I heard on the bank at Barnsfold, yesterday that Stocks was fishing poorly at the moment, so I suppose that the smallest advantage might be crucial

Been out several times since the sunny weather. Nothing rising at all, at all after mid morning until late evening. Then, for me it's been Shipmans and IOTBO and Griffiths Gnats, all in size 18s that have been getting takes. However, I haven't yet had to contend with Greenfly
