Default How do you stop the leader twisting?

It had to come. No more sticking to traditional patterns only for me. I've been trying out the washing line setup and it's going fairly well, but when I put a booby on the point it's only a matter of time before the leader seems to get a lot of twist in it. Is this normal? And if not how can I prevent it?

make sure the eyes of the booby are the same size. then you will not get the spin.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for that. The ones I've got do seem to be out of balance and I suspected they were acting as a "burler" but didn't know if it was preventable.

Is it essential in your view that they need the eyes. Wouldn't a neat cylinder of the foam with a radial hackle work with painted or stuck on eyes?

Hi Martin,

Thanks for that. Do you have any images of your cylindrical tyings?

I think a lot depends on how you are fishing the Booby. Jim's right in saying that different sized, uneven "eyes" will cause spin but IMO you will undoubtedly get a bit of spin if you are stripping the fly. A FO8 or static retrieve would minimise line twist.

I've often toyed with the idea of incorporating a very small bb swivel between the leader butt and tippet but never actually tried it. Certainly works with Ultralight lures when Perching!

a cylynder works fine but it's hard to then put in marabou for a tail and keep it within 15/16". and the booby eyes cause an irresistable turbulance in the water which waggles the marabou tail seductively, but i do use a cylinder sometimes.
