You're unlikely to be taken on to your backing on a 5# (I saw 250 yards of my backing earlier today )

There's no need to get anything fancy for your backing, a trout isn't going to bust it!

Default What Chris said.

'Over here' backing (fresh water applications) comes in 20# and 30# breaking strength. Personally, on 5wts and down I'll go with 20# Dacron. 6wt's and up I'll go with 30.

#5 #7 whats it matter?,rod weight doesn't equate to fish weight.I caught my pb brownie (14lb) on #5 from Dever a good few yrs back.Ok its not often a trout takes you into your backing, but that brownie sure did.Id rather not take the risk

Rod weight doesn't matter but it indicates the sort of fish you're likely to catch. Even somewhere like Dever, or any big fish water, the fish isn't going to seriously test your backing.

My point was that any half decent backing will do, you're not fishing for fish that are ripping off 200 yards of backing in 15 seconds so there is no need to buy the expensive stuff.

Just my opinion

£6 for 100 yards is fine but there is stuff on the market at 3 times that price which is OTT for trout. I bought a 5000 yard spool of backing from Cortland so am working my way through it slowly but surely!

I buy backing which normally costs 5-6 quid for 100 meters. For trout id go for 20lb and salmon 30lb.
