Default bait fishing....

the girlfriend wants to come fishing so i said i'd take her on wednesday up to derwent, she's never fished before so my thinking was maybe do some bait fishing, just so she learns the basics and a simple cast for general fishing, i'll fish with her but i'l get on the fly after an hour or so, which i want to teach her eventually but i just feel maybe she needs to feel a fish on bait first nd get used to learning where the fish are etc

would everyone agree with this? i'm not really sure

Why not ask her what she'd like to try? Explain that fly casting can be tricky, she might find it frustrating, but you can offer to show her the ropes before you go. Maybe her idea of fishing is sitting reading a good book next to some water, in which case, bait fishing is the way to go.

yeah, im thinking her perception of fishing is just sitting by the water with a picnic, either way im happy to teach her anything she wants and its spending time with her whilst doing something i love that grabs my attention and hopefullyif she enjoys it....it can only mean i can go more often

I took my ex-girlfriend up salmon fishing with me once. She caught a 23 pounder on her first afternoon. I'd fished all week before and only caught 1 grilse.

She thought it was easy...

...something you were no doubt reminded of numerous times!

Think i saw the photos!
in reality on reservoir, might better to let the lady have float rod out, with bait of your choice below, is visual and might catch, therefore setting the hook!

I took my missus fishing for the first time last year. Not only was it her first time fishing, it was from a boat. I gave her some practice casts on the loch before we set out. She took to casting very well, although she never caught she enjoyed her day. So my advice would be, take your partner fly fishing , she will enjoy all the more.

My wife used to come along alot but wasn't too interested in flyfishing. She loves float fishing for mackerel and trolling from the boat for Pike.
Float fishing for mackerel usually involves nice weather and there's usually plenty being caught, and she loves being on the boat waiting for the Pike.

I'll never forget her shouting at a Pike "get off my Husband", which had decided to have a jump about while my hand was a little too close during unhooking and resulted in a few cuts for my daftness.

Give her a few casting lessons on some short grass first, see how she takes to it.

my wife had a couple of lessons on grass then comes out when the weather is fine

she may fish, she may lie on the grass

the whole idea of fly fishing for me is being mobile and that how I sell it to her, its a walk in some nice scenery with some fishing

sitting in one place looking at a float or a ledegered line wouldnt be for her, or me

it always helps when the weather is nice mind as she can always just get a blanket out of the car and read a book and catch some rays while I wander off..she wouldnt leave the house with me if it didnt look nice
