Default Arlington Resa

Hi there. Am in the Eastbourne area next week and am planning a few hrs at Arlington. I have v little experience of Stillwater angling. I will be fishing from the bank. Can anybody help with advice on flies that may get me a fish or two.

Many thanks

Adam

it depends a lot on the depth of the water and how big the water is (sorry i'm not familiar with arlington) and the conditions obviously but....buzzers never seem to fail me on smaller waters and if they dont work then maybe....a lure?....

you could always watch the water for a while and look for surface activity, if you dont see any then at least you know theyre probably feedng sub surface

I've fished there once from the bank. It is quite exposed and catches any wind blowing. I caught on damsel nymphs in early summer. The ranger was very helpful with pointers. When I was there the chaps on the dam wall were cleaning up. Buzzers would probably be a safe bet but probably difficult to fish effectively from a windy bank - I would stick to small nymphs, diawl bachs, montanas and damsels or other similar marabou tailed "nymphs". If its bright and sunny the fish might be deep - warm evenings might see an evening rise. Waders would have been useful from the bank.

I suggest you give them a ring for advice before settling on it.

Roger

Good advice anywhere and especially in this case.

I haven't fished Arlington yet although I've planned to, but I have done a bit of investigation. The season there is the reverse of other reservoirs - Arlington's season starts in the autumn, fishes through the winter and spring and then closes for the summer. The reason is that the reservoir is subject to heavy draw down in the summer months, resulting in the remaining water being too warm for trout as well as possibly murky. So late April is approaching their season close. But Peter Lapsley and others have written about what a nice place it is, and it apparently fishes well at the end of winter and into mid-spring.

The water company issues a useful booklet about the fishing, and when you call the lodge the bailiffs are very helpful.
