Default Bargain or not?

I have just returned from the isle of wight and i think or hope i have bagged a bargain, split cane rod for a tenner. This rod has no markings on it what so ever, its a five piece and it looks like its 3 rods in one,let me explain two piece which looks like its around 6ft,and the 3 piece has 2 two top sections either that or the guy has just bunged 5 sections together and i have got bits from different rods it does not look like it.It is in need of a full refurbishment, new ferrules [ or whatever you call them]new rings ,and a coat of varnish cork looks okay, reel seat corroded is this worth the cost of getting it done if yes by who and what do you think the cost would be or is this just going to be one of those rods you hang on the wall. Thank you

Get in touch with Tim Harris or Gary (bbamboo) for an appraisal of it's worth and cost of restoration! We wouldn't mind seeing some photos

Sounds like a nice little bargain.

I,m not trying to put a downer on this, i'm really not. But back in the mid/late 60s i remember seeing split cane 'combination' rods. They were from China or Hong Kong, and were very cheap, about £1.5shillings. That was a days pay for many people at that time though. They came in wooden boxes, and you could get at least a fly rod and a spinning rod out of the combo, maybe another rod as well. I may be wrong, but i think the handle could be detached and turned round to give a choice of fly or spinning rod handle.

Give it a try and see how it casts.
If it is no good you can use it for drain clearing, holding up runner beans or as a whip for cutting back nettles.

Beat me to it, that's what I figured. You got a spinning rod, a light boat rod and a fly rod, kind of mix 'n' match. From what I recall, the combo didn't do any of these jobs well.

You should be able to tell from the ferrules - kind of El Cheapo chromed fixtures. If the ferrules are brass or nickel silver, I'm barking up the wrong tree

I've seen these combo rods with brass ferrules, maybe it was a particularly upmarket version I saw? It was still pants!

Default Boy, this thread took me 'back to the day.' Again.

Remember getting one of these as a Christ's Mass Present from Mom. Was the rod any 'good?' Clueless, but it was MINE ALL MINE!

Vividly remember tyeing that wood box onto the handle bars of my Bike and riding down to Green Lake in North Seattle. Couple of P & J sandwiches (a great day one would be fried eggs) and off I'd go for the day. Only other 'extra equipment' was a hand sewed bag to collect/transport trout home if I got lucky.

As Mom was won't to say: 'We're not poor, we just don't have any money.' Fifty cents in my pocket? I was Rich!

Thanks for the replies, the ferules are slightly corroded and i am unable to set the rod up properly even if i could i would not know what line to put on it as it does not have any indication of what line weight to use.
