The problem is that a large amount of the urban public would agree with him.

Not only the urban public - Hugh Falkus trumpeted the same view long and loud. So have a few other well known fishermen.

so people would rather have me knock a fish on the head for the sake of a few minutes struggle and discard of it?? say if i dont eat fish (or cant be bothered to carry around dead fish in my case)...now that would be twisted!
and even in the case of catch and release only venues (say a course venue) many of the fish have been caught numerous times and a true indication to a fish's health and mental state is if its feeding so if your catching them they cant be too stressed out....

I have the same argument with myself most years. Gave up coarse fishing years ago because of it and still struggle some times with it on trout.

Sadly, much as he irritates me, there is an element of logic in it.

I happily fish C&R, but take care not to think too deeply about it - it's just one of those inherent contradictions in virtually everything we do.

Rather than denying that there's an element of cruelty to it (which there undoubtedly is), it's probably best to say - yup, but unless you're a vegan living in a cave clothed in moss and drinking spring water, there's an elementy of cruelty in everything we do. It's just the effects of most things are out of sight.

I'd also say that the very strong environmental ethic embraced by most fly fishermen, and the benefit that the river systems gain from careful management at the hands of angling clubs (coarse and game) far outweighs the relatively minor cruelty.

Ultimately, the best way to deal with people who emote at you like that is to shrug and go - yup. You're right. So?

Im twisted.....yep.I am the whole Human race as a species is a sick twisted lot of individuals......

Thing is alot of idealistic tree hugging mung bean eating do gooding p***ks will agree with him.

There are some bits in what he says which as a fisherman are also hard to argue against. I care about the planet, I care about fish conservation and I enjoy catch and release and taking the odd one for the pot. Does that make me hypocrite???.....NO....

What the narrow minded P***K failed to mention and acknowledge is the multi million pound/dollar business that the fishing industry is, it gives thousands of people a job (something I doubt the P***K has), it also ensures the upkeep, conservation and continuation of waterways and fisheries all over the world, without which many rivers and lakes would be barren and polluted without the money from fishermen.etc etc etc

What exactly would this P***K have us all do if we didnt fish ? Is he gonna fund all the jobless people if fishing was banned, Is he gonna conserve and manage the waters...NO...

Sorry about about the rant, people like him make me sick, we already live in an ridiculously over regulated, sanitised world where every vestibule of a persons identity is being stripped from us, if we all had to be like this P***K then I would top myself, FF's sake.....

oh yeah theres no denying there is some cruelty but the bottom line for me is either end a life (which could take years from a tiny egg of constant feeding fighting and natural instinct for it to get to the size) or not. id rather not.
and plus i just really hate the look and sound of the guy on the video, id have no problemo giving him a little slap around the chops

No, they would rather you didn't fish at all other than for food.
