Question How much cormorant pressure........

will a 60ish acre ressie take? Reason i ask is that our local club (of which i am not a member but take the odd day boat on) stocked a week proir to opening day 400 bows between 1,1/2 and 2lbs and 200 browns around the pound. A club member spoke to me in the shop and asked me my thoughts on how much damage the black death actually reap on a water. The water is seriously underfished, with no one really there on a regular basis, but when they have been there has been 12+ birds on the water, this guy had actually counted 18 on one occasion.
I told him that i knew one thing, the place will be gettin emptied pretty quick if thats a daily occurrence, i was up walking the dog today and there were 4. So i ask the question, what are your thoughts on this.
I should say that my acre estimates tend to be on the conservative side so its probably a bit bigger than 60 acres.

good question
this is such an emmotive subject that it is hard to discover the true facts. One of my local club waters was stocked last winter-it was the only one in the club that wasnt frozen over.Soon after the stocking no fish were being caught and up to 20 cormarants were hanging around the lake-members saying they had cleaned the lake out.I dont know if size or fish ,the presence of slower prey eg roach makes a difference-would be interesting to hear from someone who knows the facts

all the best Nick

I should have added, Nicks post reminded me, members are bemoaning the lack of sport. Also the ressie in question is very deep in parts, is there a safe depth for trout out of reach from cormorants, and if the trout find this, might they remain there for most of the time?

I think common black deaths can reach a depth of 100ft,and can stay down just over a minute. Not good news, even worse i counted around 14 of them the other day at my local

There are 30,000 cormorants wintering in the UK of which 10,000 are estimated to be inland. Unfortunately the number is growing each year.If a fishery is being desimated by these birds, and scaring methods have been tried and failed, a fishery manager can apply for a licence to kill a limited amount of birds.

When i saw them today my first thoughts were that they should be gone by now, or is that not necessarily the case?

I've read that an adult Cormorant will eat, on average, about 1lb of fish per day.

12 Cormorants = 12lbs = 1 day
12 Cormorants = 84lbs = 1 week
12 Cormorants = 360lbs = 1 month

It's only a rough guide but it gives you some idea as to what damage they could do.

I get these birds visiting my small 5 acre stillwater every year. I watch each bird take 10+ fish per day in the 1.5 to 3 lb range and this is quite normal in my experience.

They can empty a small stillwater very quickly indeed.

Best wishes
Mike

Now Now Mike ,you know that those scientists will tell you they only eat 1/2lb fish

each year you can apply for a license and get the same old drivel and a letter saying sorry we dont believeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee you and a big "No" try again next year.(if your in business)

just crossed my mind maybe the Sandta can do something as nobody else is.
