Hello

I am moving from Oxford the London central in a few weeks and was wondering if the Thames is fishable. I realise this is a very vague or general question but I would appreciate any feedback with regards to species, rules locations etc.

All tidal waters have common fishery rights, so for the Thames this is up to Teddington Lock. But that's one long stretch of water.
Have to say I haven't given it bash yet, though it sits on my door-step. You may want to sign up on the Thames Anglers' Conservancy forum and ask questions there, admittedly most of the fishing is of the coarse variety.

Depending on where you are moving to there are other options if you like small streams.

Hi I live in W london and used to regularly fish the Thames. It's not really suuited to flyfishing, uness you try the weir pools for a pike or a salmon!! the weirs have some spectacular fish in them, (remember the Thames is a chalk stream so very rich). huge perch, chub, pike, and carp. Richmond has some quite enormous carp. i've certainly seen them to 30/40lb round the islands, and rumour has it there's a carp in there to beat 2 tone! (i can't comment on that) Plus of course, in the weirs theres always a chance of a real legend. a huge thames trout.

Don't know if the boats go with your idea of fishable bit have a word with SunkistBob about the boat charters in the Thames Estuary - some of the best fun you can have legally in a boat on the Thames and still catch.

Hi Ryan, can't really help you to much I'm afraid. Maybe give Rodger Wyndham Barnes a google, then a call. Did you ever fish the Thames in oxfordshire.

Coarse fish predominate down to Tower bridge or thereabouts, below that its salt/brackish/and sewage!
Most species present, including seatrout, maybe the odd salmon, mainly bass, flounder and eels in the salt/brackish water. Not the most pleasant surroundings to fish in!

There's some fair priced fishing at Runnymede (or was last time I went), you can get a day ticket from the National Trust office. I had a great day there with the old man catching, pike, perch, roach, dace and gudgeon - that was on the old garden fly though I'm afraid.

I've also fished the Wandle a bit for dace and chub on the dry fly, which is plenty of fun too. I think others on here know it better than I do.
