Try "The Sotherby's Guide to Fly Fishing for Trout" by Charles Jardine.

Sotheby's Guide gets my vote too. Brilliant, all-encompassing work.
You'll be impressed...

I too would recommend Sotheby's Guide to Fly Fishing for Trout by Charles Jardine. I bought a copy over 15years ago and still re-read it on a regular basis.

Another vote for Peter Lapsley who is a great no nonsense writer with a charm who has written a few books is

The Complete Fly Fisher

Which has a number of editions whereby if you are not looking for a first edition could cost you as little as £3.00.

Fascinating info on Salmon, Trout, Sea Trout, Grayling, River and stillwater and also includes a section on fly tying - a great intro to fly fishing.
