Default grassholme, hury, fontburn etc....

hi all,

i posted the other day about trying derwent on the fly as i never have before...change of heart has made me think that maybe somewhere like grassholme would be a better option....i know derwent is always windy and it can sometimes be quite a strong wind across the water, since its my first time on a large resrvoir, i was thinking maybe one of the smaller more sheltered ones may be a better idea?

To be honest, all the Northumbrian Water reservoirs are upland waters and all are prone to be choppy at the best of times. The thing with Derwent is that, while it does have a fly only bank, that's the one that normally faces into the teeth of the prevailing wind, although there is a very short length of bank that's usually shelterd at the mouth of the 'bay of plenty'. If you fish on the multibait bank, you'll normally have the wnid at your back, or at worst blowing accross, but you will also have bait anglers along all the most accessible parts of bank, even on weekdays.

At Grassholme, which is also fairly popular, you'll probably have the same problem, only on both banks. Ditto the other stocked fisheries at Fontburn and to a lesser extent Kielder.

Maybe Hury, which is both stocked and fly only (and also quite close to Grassholme), might be you're best bet.

fished grassholme on fly last week, caught 1 all day while multibait anglers bagged up.

i will be trying hury next outing, used to fish its nuts off years ago. if it is fly only then it should be better fishing.

as for wind, you will just have to adapt to it, it can change completley within an hour.

Its quite difficult to avoid the wind when fishing on reservoirs. Maybe better picking a day with a good forecast.
Hury has my vote, I was there at the weekend. Caught 3 & lost 4. Fish are not normally too far out. The anglers are always very friendly to talk to, and its not normally very busy.

hi, i know kielder is a massive water but there is a lot of bays and inlets all over the place. i fished it when it was blowing a gale but a nice shelted bay on the north bank. i like this water. also you can get motor boats which iam going to try this year.

I don't think its been fished yet this season...mind its probably still frozen!

hury is fishing well and its a water I like a lot, even better late in the season as its got a good head of roach and perch so fry hunters go mad

Some are cheaper than others to fish, the ones offering mainly wild brownies only about a tenner per day, whereas your'e looking at around £25 per day for the stocked waters.

23 quid this years prices for all their stocked waters, 8 fish limit..the wild unstocked waters are as you say about a tenner

they do stress buster tickets on all their waters as well now 16 quid for 4 fish and they run from 2:30pm to close of fishing (dependent on sunset)

and of course you can fish unlimited catch and release as you please
