Default Ennerdale Water - Lake District

Hi guys,

cant imagine this place to be a popular fishing spot, but has anyone on here fished this water..?? From what i can find on the net, and specifically 'lakedistrictfishing' website, is that the fishing is free.

I'm wondering because i've been reading about a special project up and running to try and boost the char population in the lake. That they have been harvesting eggs and capturing mature fish from the River Liza which runs into the lake, hatching and raising the young fish and then releasing them into the lake once a certain size.

Is all that is needed a Environmental Rod License to fish this place..?

Regards
D

Think thats all you need, pretty much the same for all the lakes I think, just a rod licence and your'e diddling. There's only one lake in the lake district, bassenthwaite lake, all the rest are waters i.e derwentwater, ullswater etc or tarns or meres, little snippet of information there.

Good article in this months T&S all about the various National Trust waters, a good read, blown a few well hidden gems out of the water, so to speak.
Malham Tarn will never be the same now.
Cracking article on Paul Proctor on the Annan, jeez that fella can catch fish, I must rub shoulders with him more often.

Yeah, sorry about that MrTrout. In my defense, the info was all on the website before I wrote the article, I've just done a filter of all the **** that was there and tidied up the data somewhat.

Glad you enjoyed it though.

If you are making a trip up from the South, specifically to fish the less well known lakes, it would be worth dropping in to John Norris, in Penrith for a chat. One of the guys at least does a fair bit of fishing from a kayak.

However, leave your credit card outside with your wife.

And make sure that she stays outside as well. They have some nice country outfits in there as well as fishing tackle.

Yep, same here re:Hodder, Malham etc.
Whilst it's nice to read about "hidden gems" in a mag, once publicised, they're no longer gems for long, as the popularity goes up accordingly. Bit of a dilemma really, I guess we all (certainly myself incl) guilty of inadvertently publicising remote / quiet waters when reporting our exploits.

point is that the national trust need to realise the importance of fishing on their waters. If 1-2 people per year fish a place and it nets them a couple of pounds why would they bother investing in making it better or open up other bits of water. Likewise if it's an under utilised resource as day ticket water what happens if a syndicate comes along and offers 10x the income they get from it being public?

I wanted to promote the open access water, to make people realise there is some fantastic water out there, AND to make sure that inside the NT there is an understanding of the value of day ticket public access water.

It's a fine line between talking about secret spots, and promoting places for better use. I hope I got that about right as lets face it, Malham has been in T&S before, Mottisfont is a £300+ day ticket water - and all of the sites are already published on the NT's website and previously in some old written guides.

I do fish some lovely secret waters (not on any website or guidebook) and would never ever publish them out of respect for the water and the locals, but in this instance I wouldn't foresee a sudden influx of thousands of fishermen to Horner Woods...

thanks chaps..!!

I have to say though, with char being present in this water and some other tarns such as goats water and 'presumably' blind tarn, i'm very surprised there havent been fishermen specifically targeting them on the fly. There diet must consist of insect life just like the trout they share the water with, so why should they any more difficult to catch...?? I know that they frequent the deeper water, but surely you can target them on sinking lines.

I've been thinking about walking the stretch of river that enters ennerdale at the top end looking for any char or trout that may be present. I've been reading that they use the river to spawn, so hopefully there might be one or two still hanging around..??

Cheers
D
