This weekend it was really bright and sunny which aren't ideal .
I fished the derwent on opening day, I brought home 4 fish including one of 4lb. I was bait fishing that day, but the guys fly fishing did better than I did.
I was fishing quite far out with a popped up powerbait ball, and had no success. Then one of the rangers came round to check my ticket. We had a chat and he pointed out why the fly fishing guys were doing so much better - because the fish were much closer to the shore. So I lobbed my bait in, about 20ft out and got a fish straight away. The rest came in the following hour.
Last year, on my first day out fly fishing, me and a mate were out all day and caught nothing. We then decided to have one last go in a little bay on the way back to the car. I caught my first fish on the fly and he hit his bag limit in an hour.
I think the key is to keep mobile on the derwent. They could be a few feet out, they could be 50 yards out. They could be up in the water, they could be down. They could be right in front of you or hiding around the next corner.
