Andre, I don't think it is as clear cut as all that bungs area bit like Marmite.
As with may thinks in fly fishing its a matter of opinion.
But here is the two ways that I use them.
1. Teaching beginners to nymph in rough broken water as it can be difficult to see takes just using the flyline as an indicator in these conditions.
2. Fishing a team of buzzers on a windy day, cast in to the wind make a big down wind mend then let the wind carry your line down wind in a big sweeping arc. The indicator help as it is pushed along by the wind and it also help spot takes when you have a big arc of line on the water and a bit if surface chop.
The only con I can think of is people think you are float fishing but that's thier problem not yours
