Question tips for fishing lures??

which lures work best on reservoirs?
also, will buzers be as effective as they are on small lakes?

Hi, i,d try black and green long tailed goldheads, cats whisker is a classic and cats whisker boobies on a shortish leader on a decent sinker, long tailed damsels, also nomads even blobs in various colours ( sunburst ) as an example. They all can be fished with different retrieves but watch for tail nipping on the long lures either speed up or slow down. Hope this helps ck.

According to a lot of posters on here lures should be banned as unsporting and too easy.
How dare you even consider fishing lures when you can blank in style using buzzers and dries at this time of year.
Lures are only for fishmongers and stockie bashers.

Seriously though, lures do work well all year round and anyone wishing to try them should.
On bigger reservoirs try prospecting with a lure on the point and a couple of imitative patterns above them to locate where the fish are. This covers all bases, but inevitably the fish will decide to take your lure.
I don't think pattern matters too much, colour is better. Black is generally best with a bit of flash, then white and orange next, although olive damsels will work on certain waters. Other colours work as well, weighted, unweighted and buoyant flies give you further options to control the depth
I personally love it when the massive hatches of orange blobs come out in the summer, the best imitative fishing soon follows.

black ,black and green and orange seem to be the best colour lures for me at the moment.Where i fish there are some good buzzer hatches at the moment so buzzers and diawl bachs are doing well. If the fish are a bit deeper something like a goldhead hares ear (or lure) on the point will help, fished static or with slow pulls

hope this helps Nick

Can't help you on the lure side as i never fish them, Black buzzers are the most popular also dont forget to try the Damsel fly nymph fished on the point.

Hmmmm! I decided on a short session this morning at a small lake, not very deep.

The bottom was covered with filamentous algae, and lots floating on top.

For a couple of hours I tried dropping nymphs and buzzers through the gaps in the weed, twitching and giving them the odd jerk before recovering them with a slow figure of eight, with just a couple of nips for my troubles.

Time to go home, so on went a large white cats whisker stripped back quite fast through the gaps in the surface weed.

First retrieve, bang! A trout in the bag.

Second retrieve, bang! another trout and no sign of the cats whisker, just the line disappearing down its throat!

So, after a couple of hours trying to be subtle, my bag-limit was attained in a couple of minutes once the change was made to something very unsubtle but effective.

I'm still not sure whether the aim of the game is to be sporting, or to catch trout!

Surely a damsel is basically an olive coloured lure? Never really understood why it wasn't classed as one.

I think it was Dick Shrive, dead long ago now, but a mate of Bob Church, who said of lure fishing, "you chuck it out and then you drag it back again, and when you can't you've got one".

In it's simplest format that about sums it up, but then it could very easily apply to most other forms of fly fishing as well.
