Default What Stillwater near Penrith ?

Hi Guys

I am off to Penrith for a few days holiday in June and hope to get a days fishing when there.

Where would be the best place to go for some stillwater fly fishing ?

Cheers

Hi QM, have a google for Bessie Beck just off J39 on the M6, nice stillwater well run, and also Blencarn fly fishery, about 7 miles out of Penrith.

Bessy Beck - about 1/2 an hour
Watendlath, nr Keswick has had some good reviews.

A bit further south,
High Newton and Ghyll Head
Farleton View.

I think that you can get day tickets for Killington Lake off the M6

Blencarn, or better still run over to Keswick to Watendlath Tarn. Or for some free, wild brownies and something a bit more challenging - Haweswater

Watandlath is a lovely place, if you ever get the chance to fish it. It has its days when it can be tricky, especially when very hot, but if you stay till late evening the place goes nuts! When i was there last summer i got a few, what seemed...resident fish.. Def not fresh stockies and they took of like torpedoes...!!..and were lovely dark fish.

Look closely at an O.S. a few miles to the south west of Penrith and you should be able to pick out a little place called 'Ullswater'. Wild brown trout fishing, mayfly hatch, miles of accessible bank fishing, good wading, boats available..... and it's free (not the boats though).

Fished Ullswater today from the bank, howling gale, and flaming tourists about, and got no peace from a brace of Mallards, nicking my sandwich.
And again tomorrow from a boat, usually the best way to get into the wildies IMO, some superb fish in Ullswater, plenty over 3lbs taken last season.
Two mates had 26 fish to the boat last Friday, it aint easy, but if you know where to look they are to be found.

I'm guessing you had access to a private boat Steven? Downside for tourists trying to get a boat, unless things have changed, is that there's just a couple available from Jared(?) at Glenridding Marine and last time I looked he was charging £30+/day. Still, at least the fishing's free!
