Default Dupuytren's contracture

Hi,
I was told today by my GP that I have Dupuytren's contracture in my right hand.
It's a condition whereby the tendons in the hand harden and contract, causing the fingers to curl up and lock in place. It's quite painful at times.
The hand, my casting hand, has been sore for a month or so but I put it down to fishing through the cold winter we've just had. Not so, it seems.
The condition can be treated either with surgery - I've to see a specialist - or injections, and I'm hoping for injections if possible.
At the moment it's tolerable and I can fish for a few hours, though I pay the price afterwards.
I wondered if anyone else has the same condition and how they manage with it?
Whatever the outcome, I'm not going to let it stop me fly fishing - I only started last year and I love it with a passion already.
I'll learn to cast with my left hand if necessary
All the best,
Steve

Hi i had the same condition for years, the index finger in my left hand was bent right over and the whole of my right hand was badly curved .you could have stood on it and it would not straighten.
any way seen a surgeon at the Canisburn part of the glasgow royal who operated within 2 weeks on my left hand, and did my right hand six months later, and i havent looked back,if you go for the op,you have nothing to worry about, hope this helps.if you want any more info you are welcome to pm me.

Thanks for the replies guys, quite comforted to know it's not a major problem. The anti-inflammatory gel the doc gave me isn't doing much good so it looks like I'll have to go for the injections or the surgery. As it's mainly affecting the little finger on my right hand, I'm not sure surgery is necessary yet, but I don't want it to spread to the other fingers either so we'll see what the specialist thinks.
Cheers,
Steve

I noticed 'pads' on my fingers, then my palms around 10 years ago.

Initially they disappeared and new ones appeared.

About a year ago I noticed that the ring finger on my right hand was bending down, and went to the doctor several weeks ago.

He gave me a leaflet and said that an op might be needed if it became a real problem (it's a condition that develops slowly).

At the moment it isn't too bad, and I don't feel restricted or in pain.

So fingers crossed, I wont be needing that op for a while.

(I'm 67 now, and only recently took up fly-fishing)
