Short of learning to cast with your "wrong" hand (which is not as difficult as it sounds) I would recommend the first of Wobbly Face's solutions, casting over your other shoulder. Instead of having your elbow at your side, raise it outwards so that the rod is canted across your face at an angle of around 45 degrees, then you can make your cast in safety. It sounds as if you are still a novice caster and, if so, this method has the added advantage of preventing you from taking the rod too far back.
