Default British Record Trout

Hi All
Just come across an old entitled "where to fish" by H.D. Turing from around 1937. Makes very interesting reading.
At the back of the book is a section entitled "a list of notable Fish".
It states a 39 1/2 pound trout was caught on lock Awe by a Mr. w. Muir in 1866 and states this is the British record.
Does anyone know why this fish is not Still recognized ?
The second largest listed is 30 ˝ pounds caught on Lough Derg in 1861
Regards
Stuart

It was part of the general clear out of what were considered to be "dodgy" records some years ago (late 1960s or early 1970s I think). I believe that the Loch Awe trout record went because it was believed to be too big for a trout, there was no hard evidence and it was possibly suspected to be a salmon, it's therefore somewhat ironic to find that several decades later the record has returned to Loch Awe and is not far short of the deposed fish.

Other records that went at the same time were those for pike (Lough Corrib), chub (River Annan) and grayling (River Melgum). The Derg trout must have gone as well because the current Irish record is 26lb 2oz from L. Ennell but pushed very hard by a Corrib fish last year.

If you go back to late 50's early 60's you'll see that the British Record committee went through the list of records like a dose of salts and dissalowed many records The ''LOCH'' AWE record is back up to 31LB12oz(I think)

I've got five copies of Where to Fish from about 1940 onwards and always found the List of Notable Fish very interesting. It was this list that helped me to establish where Redmire Pool was at a time when it was a very closely guarded secret.

In one edition it listed large carp as being caught from not only Redmire but also Bernithan Pool, both near Ross on Wye and I reckoned that as it was unlikely that there were two pools in the area containing record sized carp, that they were one and the same. Added to this was a give away line in an article by Richard Walker in Angling magazine that mentioned catching a pike on mayfly in the stream that drained the pool. I established that this had to be the Garron and followed it back on the map ultimately finding Bernithan Court and Redmire Pool not 4 miles from where I lived at the time.

The Lough Derg trout used to be (maybe still is) in the Natural History Museum in Dublin but was discredited as a record when modern scale readings showed that it was, in fact, a salmon.

The pike record that SB refers may be that of a 56lb fish caught from Lough Conn on 1922-ish by John Gavin. The fish was reputed to have a 10lb salmon in its stomach. Gavin also boated an 11lb brown on the same day. Not a bad session

Due to the political situation in Ireland at the time which was affecting the transport system, it proved impossible for the captor to have the fish ratified in Dublin although it was weighed on shop scales and scale samples were taken. The head and jaws are still around somewhere, maybe again in NHM in Dublin

Wouldn't count! Now clearly in the Republic of Ireland following the uprising half a century later.

In any case the estabhed 'British Record, (Rod Caught) Fish Committee' Click the image to open in full size.
has been taken over by the Angling Trust. Angling Trust - British Records Fish Committee

The claims process probably now open to abuse with the recent acceptance of photographs as proof of identification (and capture).

It's interesting. It could be that in the future we'll have less records as the Catch and Release ethic wins ever more support.

Remember the big Ness salmon of about 3 years ago? Before that there was a reported huge Dee salmon.

Who carries truly heavyweight scales on the off-chance of a record fish?
