Default Line Memory

I've recently bought new gear to start fluff chuckin, including filling up (too many!!) reel spools. I tried a couple of lines and realised I was most comfortable with Airflow Velocity WFs straight out the box. So, flushed with the Eureka moment I filled a Koma and a GRXi with WF6 and WF8 plus a couple of inters. I took the WF8 out on Sunday; and this is after stretching the new line from a post in the garden and cleaning it with line slick before loading it about a month ago; only to find coils and kinks once on the water. It was fishable but not right. My question is, should line be taken off-spool and stored loose or have i made a bad decision on line?

Lines vary immensely in how much memory they have, but very important is to load your reel without introducing twists in the new line which 'create' loops when the line is extended. I've no trouble with lines left on the spool for long periods, provided that after I've been fishing I extend a full line either on the water or on grass, then carefully reel up without too much tension and being careful to distribute it evenly on the reel. I also clean the line, rod and rod rings carefully before long periods when not using them, and again before use. A nice clean slick line does wonders for your casting.

Done, done and done that. I'm from a background of beachcasting with open spool multipliers and I wind line on meticulously; it's imperative to do this to keep the spool in balance, so I don't think it's that. I must admit I've also probably got some sort of compulsive dis-order when it comes to cleaning kit after use, including line, but this a brand new line first used after stretching, cleaning and careful spooling but after about a month sitting on the spool.

maybe it is just that the line WAS a bad choice. I usually look for something that feels limp in the hand, I find the stiffer, harder coated lines are often more inclined to have more memory, but thats just my idiosyncracy, maybe a change of brand would do better

Are we talking about an Airflo floater here.

I've never had much bother with Airflo floaters myself - I actually prefer that line as I find it works better with my 7wt Sage XP than many of the more expensive ones.

Thanks bud, I think you could be right here, the Velocity does seem a bit on the stiff side. Any chance of it softening up a bit after use?? Or should I maybe try the old "soak it in a dish of warm water trick?" Failing that there's always fleabay (with a warning to fellow forum members!!)

Hello most if not all plastic lines have memory as the material will develop memory after being wound on a reel spool. even the spool it comes with if realy old stock can do this. there is a right way to put a flyline on but i presume you can do, sometime stretching it will benifit but i dont follow this, depending which make and model you have and what it says on the box, no memory, low memory, etc if yours are expensive then return for replacement, you can clean and use permaplas replasticiser might help, but failing that find out what others on here use that is always a start. maybe you can set up a thread on fly lines only with marks out of 10 for memory, castability, etc, the only flyline with no memory is a silk. anyway good luck

Thanks bud, I tried the other the other floater (a WF8 also), that was the same; but the inter was fine. The worst of it is, I've got another 3 spools of WF7 on the GRXi; again all new and not tried. I wouldn't care, but the first WF6 Velocity line I bought is perfect after 6 or so outings, as it was from the start

hello as jim asked are you talking airflo floaters, for intermediate lines and sinkers it should not be a problem, ask jim as i think other forum members might have mentioned before. ps if you are not happy with the and just purchased take or send back. maybe buy off here plenty of choice, i think the airflow company came from the sue burgess back in olden days maybe richard knows!!. just another mention, if you ever went to the C L A gamefair see whos selling off old stock in lines but never buy.
