Default when you want to go out but cant

typical lol,,, i wanted to get up to the local fishery to get back into the swing of things again ( like refreshing my casting ) after winter off.
i have a look at the weather forecast and it is to be rather windy for most of next week and i know i can cast in wind but not gusts that are expected ( nearly 50mph ) lol. so i might have to hold off until the following week.
if it helps my rod is 10'6 and 8#

so just a general chat ,,, and Q

how strong a wind dose it take to keep you from wetting a line ?.

I was out Friday, place I fish is notorious for being windy even on a calm day.
Only take my 9ft 6 weight and ended up wind bashing. Could only manage about 10 to 15 yard/meters even with double haul and then not always with the flies turning over. Despite the difficulties, I managed 6 out using size 16 black buzzer and 16 black gnat on the dropper. The place has difficult stoney and high banks which doesn't help matters.
You could always try with the wind behind your back, not always where the trout are though.

I was out on Friday also and there were times I almost lost my hat the wind was so strong. Still managed a few fish and a lot of wind burn.

lol it dosent take that much wind to de hat a man. unless is a tight fit and you have a strap / cord to keep hold.

thats just it if i show up and theres a wind guaranteed everyone who is there at that time will be at the end with the wind behind them and wont move.
ive been at the fishery once and no one mooved at all and i was stuck fishing from the 1 spot , thankfully not for long it was on my last hour lol.
but i would hate to be there and stuck in 1 spot for an entire ticket.

could be a laugh going and spending more time tree catching than having a wet line lol.

i was out Loch fishing one last year with a friend and the wind was picking up all day and we headed to a new spot but as he turned the boat he lost his hat and decided to leave it. but he hooked me in the back of the head down to the strong winds and wandered why his line / flies didn't go out infront of him until i said hang on there in my head lol.

Just go and do it!

Fly fishing isn't something you do when the conditions are ideal ... it's a way of life!

If the opportunity is there then just take it, that's how you learn, it's not complicated, experience, reflect, learn.

Had my first opportunity to fish at Hury Reservoir, Teesdale on Saturday. It was a bit breezy at home, nothing too bad though. Drove for 1/2 hour to the reservoir. Got out or the car, only to be confronted by what seemed like a force 9 gale. Pondered fishing it for 60 seconds, then got back in the car and drove home. There were about 6 anglers out as far as I could see, I hope it was worth it for them.

its alright i am convincing my self more and more to go one day this week the more i think about it lol.
just thinking i could be the only nut there and i could hook the biggest fish lol.
i know its only a fishery but hey fishing is fishing in my eyes.

think i will dust off my bag , vest , fly boxes , reel and give my lines an extra clean lol.

lol stacon sounds like you should have went wind surfing instead, thankfully the weather where i live is same at the fishery as it is only a 15 - 25 min walk from my front door.

A side wind isn't too bad as long as it is off the non casting arm (can be hard work and dangerous if coming over the casting arm, but you can learn to adapt). Just allow the line and flies to swing round with the wind. Had a few good sessions using this tactic.
