Default double haul

hi i just started double hauling following a lesson at the weekend.
what would you say is a fair distance to cast ?
i have 10 yards left on my reel, do i need better timing to shoot this ?
what are your thoughts please

My thought on the subject is that it doesn't matter what others think. You should strive for quality casts rather than quantity (distance). The distance will eventually follow suit.

charlie,
you have just started to master haul techniques, as you get more experienced/practised, more distance will come, however ten yards left on reel is a somewhat arbritory figure!
some of my lines, with ten yards left on reel, would mean a cast of 35 yards or 10 yards! (and yes i can!)
Better to practise on grass and measure distance (as this seems important to you), see if you can increase distance a yard a week with half an hour practise each day!
however, as as has been already stated, presentation might be king!
regards
bert

My first thoughts are, are you planing on going to distance casting competitions? or are you whacking the water so much with your line that the fish keep out of the way

joking apart where I fish the double haul is handy if I want to get to deep water, but its way down the list of what I think is important,
I think its presentation that's the priority, & this time of the year I find that the fish are feeding close in where the water is warmer & insect life is more prolific,

if it is distance casting that's the priority then there's some good tips on youtube

It's that old "my d*ck is bigger than your d*ck" thing again. Someone once said "its not how you chuck it out that matters, it's how you pull it back in again"

So you chuck out 25 yards of line, leader and flies that land in a heap. You then pull back ten yards to straighten it all out and only then do the flies start to fish. Better, methinks, to put 15 yards out nice and straight and have the flies fishing immediately. When that works consistently you'll find an extra two or three yards go out no problem, and when THAT works another two or three yards and so on.

You are only fishing when you are casting without thinking about it.

Casting 30 yards can be a big advantage when fish are rising 30 yards out from the bank, they aren't always close in, but you'd be better concentrating on getting a good turnover rather than on distance.

Best fun in the world is to visit a fishery where the locals are all out up to their armpits wading and double hauling for all they're worth and go behind them picking up decent fish along the bank! Forget distance until you've got on top of presentation and at least a modicum of delicacy!

not trying to be clever here but the guy has asked a question, it might be that he is simply looking for a bench mark to gauge his current technique against.

i'm willing to bet most people who have had casting lessons got instruction in that lesson on getting distance and that it was the single or double haul.

perhaps someone can give the guy some guidance relating to his question?

tin hat on waiting for the attack lol

I learnt the double haul decades ago.

The advantage i use it for is to cover more ground.

Cast out, count to 10 (lol) retreive for a little bit and stop. then do it again and again.

I look at it as having 3 cast in one.

In time you will improve.
