Nymphs: GRHE and Pheasant tail Nymphs maybe a few gold heads ...

I would take a few Greenwells and Kites Imperial , A sedge pattern and some klinks also something black maybe some red tag . That doesnt sound much but in sizes from 14 to 18 will cover most of it to start with. Dont overcomplicate things and go for plenty of different sizes rather than loads of different patterns.

Add some BWO, Grey Dusters, Black Knats, Elk's Hair Caddis and Adams Parachute and you have my river box

You might enjoy some posts on this blog that start here and then, if you work forward in time, the later blog posts will maybe help you a little in your migration from still water to rivers.

Shameless plug - but my DVD has fly selections (deliberately minimalist range) as well as year-round reading the water guidance.

£15

Clip here to see if you like it:

Hi Paul G....

Just watched your clip. Very interesting. thanks for sharing.

I noticed you tie your dry fly directly onto your leader with no dropper. What knot do you use for this? Do you find this affects the takes you get to the dry? Do you use droppers for attaching the nymphs?

I would buy your DVD to get these answers but im a tight git!!

Cheers
Paul

Paulfish, A taster answer would be:

The same knot I use to attach my flies in general (Pitzen knot), only tied onto the bend of the hook instead of the eye.

It doesn't affect the number of offers, it can sometimes affect number of successful hookups.

A short dropper can also be employed to improve hookup ratio (as well as other things like choice of hook pattern for your klinkhämers) without sacrificing too much sensitivity.

For rivers I prefer nymphs simply I think it is more challenging to present a perfect nymph than a dry fly. So my best patterns would be PTN variants like marys and hares ear variants. I also use a lot of jigs. For some ideas look at Unique Flies: Welcome
