Default PC help

Hoping some of the more technically minded amongst you might be able to steer me in the right direction on this one.

I'm trying to set up a second monitor on my laptop so that I can see photographs on the TV. I've managed to connect the TV but it seems to work as an extension to my laptop screen (I can drag stuff over using the cursor) but I ideally want to use the TV as a duplcate screen, so I can do photograph slideshows.
I'm told it needs to be set up as a 'duplicate monitor' rather than an 'extended monitor' but the only option I seem to have is a drop-down to select either 'plug and play monitor' or a 'default monitor', whatever they are.

I'd be grateful for any help.

Derek

Try pressing windows logo and P key at same time it should give you 4 options on screen , go to duplicate and click , hope this helps.

this is for windows 7 , if using another o/s please state which.
If using Vista go to control panel>display, click on settings then tick checkbox expand onto 2nd monitor

On my laptop you hold down the wee blue fn key and press 5 until the choice you want is up( usually three times). Some pcs it's the number 4!

Hope this helps

There is usually a short-cut key for every laptop, which can be any one of Fn+4 to Fn+8, it usually shows two screens on one of the number keys, just Fn+<Num> (and repeat until the right display mode is selected). However, this assumes that you have the right software for your laptop installed.
The other option is to look at your display adapter settings via Start -> Control Panel -> Display. On the Settings tab you should see both screens and their respective resolutions. Clicking on the Advanced button takes you to a new window where you can see a several tabs, one will be for your display adapter (e.g. Intel, nVidia, etc.) and either it will be here or you can launch you display adapter settings tool.

The Fn+<Num> is the easier route, but both work ...

Hope this helps
-Alun.

As the above answers but you may have to update your graphics card driver specially if its nvidia , good luck with it.

Hey Pondlife,

To sort this on Windows XP it is just a tick box that needs to be unticked. If you right click on your desktop -> goto Properties -> select the Settings tab -> then on this window under Display select your TV from the drop down menu -> at the bottom there should be two tick boxes, one will be Extend My Desktop Onto This Monitor, untick this and it will be set as a duplicate monitor.

Cheers,
Scott

This kinda depends on the laptop defaults, sometimes this will just turn off the second monitor. (BTW: Right click on your Desktop -> Properties is the same as Start -> Control Panel -> Display, I just tend to run too many windows and getting to the desktop can be a pain in the a**e )
Good luck OP.

Thanks for all the help guys.....and apologies for the delay in getting back.

Tried everything but without success. Guess I'll have to get the local computer shop to sort me out.
