Default Beginner's tackle query.

Hi folks, great site, glad I found it. About to embark on my fly fishing adventure after many years trying to find the time with one thing or another. As a beginner, how does a 6/7 ,9ft rod, WF7 flt line with a 9 to 10 ft 8lb breaking strain leader directly to the fly sound.(For a small stillwater loch) Remember ,just to start with until I hopefully become more proficient. Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

Sounds perfect to me. If your casting is ok i'd go up to a 12ft leader, and then a bit longer once you get better.

Welcome to the art of fly fishing, youre set up sounds okay if you think that youre casting is not good i would recommend a lesson or two and i would recommend just useing one fly to start with.If possible try and go with someone who has been fly fishing before as he or she will be able to steer you in the right direction on fly choice, but if that is not possible and you see anybody else fishing just go and ask them most fly fishermen are very helpful.Once you catch that first fish you will be hooked.

Welcome to the forum and Fly Fishing Your set up is good for where you are going to fish. Don't be afraid to ask anglers at the venue if you are struggling with any aspect. Most people are very helpful.

Why not say where you are fishing? There's a good chance that somebody will know it and can point you in the direction of tactics, flies, hotspots etc.

Good luck - and maintain a positive relationship with your bank manager. You're going to need him

Setup is more or less there. Don't be afraid of dropping down to 5 or 6lb leader though.

Hi Davie,

welcome to the forum, you'll find great advice here, I know I have.

your set up seems pretty sensible to me and similar to mine when I started out a couple of years ago; I agree with Chris above, you can afford to drop the tippet strength to 5 or 6 pounds unless you are catching monster trout lol. I normally use 4/5/6 depending on the size of fish and colour of water i'm fishing.

If fishing from bank with one fly, on loch which aint stocked, keep leader to 9' max, but reduce breaking strain to 5 or 6 lbs, as previously suggested.
If fishing dropper use 6 or 9 lbs to dropper then reduce to 5 or 6.
The very fact that you use the word "loch" would suggest you are in gods country on wild waters, so 6 lbs straight through will be good!

As someone who was in the same position as you just a few short years ago I think you have made fairly wise choices there. I was afraid of using lighter leaders initially but and always went for 10-12 lb stuff for fear of losing fish, now I fish Snowbee fluorocarbon stuff at 6lb and it is great and very stealthy (though it is about £12 a reel)! As a beginner if you're anything like me you will be fishing stocked lakes which are heavily fished the fish know most of the tricks in the book so (I think) a less visible leader helps.
