Default Tackle shops in York.

Can anyone recommend a decent on which has a wide range of rods and reels. Was going to buy a Cortland rod off Tacklebargains but having second thoughts as I want to try before I buy.

Is that Cortland rod you got off me still going strong?
The best shop for fly gear in York is probably Chas Burns at Hooks & Tackle but to be honest, he doesn't really stock what I 'd call a wide range of rods. You'd be better phoning in advance to see what he has in stock to avoid a wasted journey.
Maybe someone else can help because I'd like to know too but I don't know anywhere in North Yorkshire with a a really wide range of equipment. The last time I went rod hunting, I went to Harrogate where you've a choice of 3 shops fairly close together; the Orvis shop, Linsley Brothers and Brown Trout.
If you want to combine it with a day's fishing, the shop at Jubilee lakes stocks a few different brands of rod.

Agreed Chas doesnt stock a large range , He sells some other brands but mainly concentrates on his Burns Built rods that are on harrison blanks. I have several of these and they are excellent.

Other decent outlets are thin on the ground . There is Orvis in Pickering and Harrogate and the others mentioned above. Others should be able to advise on leeds and west yorkshire outlets...

Considering the size of the city and its location, Leeds is appallingly devoid of a decent game fishing emporium.

I've seen wychwood, sharpes, cortland, shakespeare and a few other rods in the shop over the last few years. Although I would recommend his burns rods as i have 2. Give him a call and see what he got in. Best thing you can put a line on them and have cast on the river foss behind the shop.

Regards

David

Quick addition to my last post as i am now awake. He has a basic internet tackle site and I have posted a link to the rods page but he always has specials lurking in the storeroom of the shop. Otherwise he'll get things in if you ask (examples he's got things from snowbee and vision for me).

Rods

I have nothing to gain from promoting this shop other than I selfishly want to maintain a independent fly fishing tackle shop in my home city, which every year is losing its independent shops to branded chains of pasty, coffee and milkshake outlets.

Parochial rant over.

Cheers

Think you are well justified in your rant, mate. From time to time, Mrs B and I present our papers at the Pennine border crossing, and have a day out in York. What used to be a unique and charming city is fast joining the bland ubiquity of "ifwebuildittheywillcomeland".

We're all doomed.
