Question Ever wanted to kick/throw your boat partner in?

I spent a great day saturday afloat with my brother at farmoor and was surprised to hear for the ranger chris there were lots of fish moving and large ammount of buzzers hatching etc. This some what changed my plans and shows you the effect some sustained weather can have even early in the season.
ANYWAY largely my brother and myself fished same tactics with a washing line with intermediate lines, then buzzers later in the afternoon. WHY is it (and i am trying not to be the green eyed monster) BUT WHY IS IT, that the trout were seemingly throwing themselves at his flies at twice the rate of mine

To top this off too many times to remember he would put his rod down to make a brew, pee, eat, etc etc and shortly after the rod would be going out of the boat as trout tried to make off with his flies.

To top the day off i got smashed by a monster well a smash take on the buzzers anyway.

could be he was fishing deeper and slower/static than you and getting to the feeding depth.Or could be just the way it goes!

all the best Nick

Well just maybe you were moving your flies to fast, or just that bit quicker than him.
Could be hes just a better fisherman.

Thanks for your replies. The thing that baffled both of us was that i advised my brother to go on both set ups and in he main we fished identical set up's including flies, lines and depths. We were fishing the identical buzzers under indicators too so all equal and we were retreiving incredibley slow and leaving the waves/wind to move the buzzers around?
I guess that is just fishing at times, next time i will not advice on the way to go and keep it under my hat

Did you try swapping sides? The fish may have been moving across you in one direction, following an underwater current eg, and were seeing your brother's flies first. However, if you tried swapping sides and he was still getting more fish, you just have to put it down to one of those days. It'll be your turn next trip!!

Default sides

Good thought and maybe i will sit in his seat next time, but fish were all over and we fished from the same sides regularly? i think it just is one of those things that keeps fishing not only unique,Intriguing, frustrating and yet makes me want to keep coming back for more.
already planning our next trip

Something I noticed when I got heavily into lure-fishing and went to fish-ins.

Some anglers fishing the same lure pattern, in the same colour and in the same way as their companions were having much more success than others.

Gradually I came to realise that no two people work a lure the same way, however hard they might try.

Such small variables as to the angle of the rod, the length of the angler's arms and their build, the tightness of the grip, the smoothness of the retrieve etc have subtle effects as to exactly what's happening down in the water were the hooks are.

And this nailed another mystery, how come some anglers do so well on a particular lure, whereas others never seem to catch on that pattern (especially galling when the latest must-have expensive 'killer' lure fails to deliver when other anglers are swearing by it).

It's the unique way that a lure is retrieved that is coupled with the characteristics of the lure pattern, that produces an irresistible strike-trigger or sends a warning to the quarry.

I don't doubt that it's the same with fly-fishing.

Each of us has a repertoire of retrieves that might be the same as the next angler, eg slow figure-of-eight, jerky strip and pause etc, but each person adds their own unique characteristics which allied with the fly pattern, colour and conditions means that one angler keeps getting hits whereas the other doesn't even get follows.

But the next day, a different fly, the trout in a different mood, the tables are well and truly turned.
