Default Starting a youngster

My 10 year old son would like to start fly fishing, he is autistic though and finds co-ordination hard sometimes. Therefore I am looking to try and get a few budget bits and pieces together to try and teach him to fish and don't want to spend too much incase he doesn't get on with it or incase he damages it.

What size and make rod would be a good starting point and are there any cheap reels around anymore? I took a look online but the cheapest reel was around £10 - £15.

Also I will need a couple of budget weight forward flylines (for me and for him). Are the mill ends any good or is there something better that I should look at?

Thanks in advance

Hello sounds like he is keen so i think would enjoy, i understand how things are as my oldest son has mild autism but at 37 he finds difficult with other things. anyway i presume still water so i think 8.5ft rod for 5/6 w/f line. reel £10 to £15 no problem look on here classifieds, budget line john norris also cheap rods, maybe a pirate line from grommet on here. so just a fishy bag, net, some bits and bobs and box for flys and heh presto. i am sure others can also advise or maybe have surplas gear. so good luck

Welcome to the forum, if you give us an idea where you'll be fishing you might get a few more specific answers

We live in Scotland and will mainly be fishing small lochs for wild brownies, along with a couple of stocked lochs for rainbows.

This will mainly be bank fishing and should not involve wading.

Hello thats nice so if your son is of average height then an 8.5ft rod 5/6 line is ideal middle to tip action would not over burden his casting. if you can do 1 lesson this might help, but if you say which loch your fishing i am sure others on here do too and maybe help too

Some great advice here already - I have sent a PM to Grommit about lines. Now just off to ebay to look for cheap rod and reels :-)

Glasgow angling centre were selling Shakespeare odyssey rods for £15. Nice wee rod if the deal is still on.
