Here you go a cheap starter reel that will cover streams (just) rivers and stillwaters.Think Ian ( grommit on here ) was doing a deal on them a little while ago.But you will need different sizes as one won't fit all situations

Greys G-Series Fly Reel

Well a Battenkill BBS111 will cover your streams and rivers admirably, robust well proven reels.
For larger lines like #6/7/8 an Okuma Airframe will do the job well, or a Sonik SK3.
I wouldn't recommend one reel for all three, as you will need a few different lines TBH.

I think if you just got the mid range one 5/6 and spare spools, you could at a push add or subtract the amount of backing on the reel. This would depend on the line weight ie if you put a #3 line on it,it would need loads more backing than if you put a #6 line on it

The only problem with this is the rod, again one rod doesn't fit all

and theres me thinking it would be less trouble to take up fly fishing, i thought one rod one reel and a box of flys in my pocket ,did not realise it would be so complicated. been carp fishing for years now getting a bit older to much gear to cart around,,fancy a change .

On any given day you could do just that. Its just that the one rod, reel and box of flies would likely need to differ depending on what you were doing. A 9' 6wt would likely cover you for rivers and small still waters. If you wanted to fish streams you'd need to go lighter, and to fish big reservoirs you'd be better off with something a bit bigger. If I were you I'd try to work out where I'd be fishing most regularly and get a setup to suit that, and go from there
