Default 7.5 ft vs 9ft rod

I'm looking to get a travelling rod. Unfortunately I'm limited to size (it has to fit in a pannier).

The two in my price range (ultra cheap) are a telescopic 9 ft #8 rod and a 5 section 7.5 ft #5 rod.

The 7.5 ft looks the better rod to me, but I've never had a rod that short or with that light a line before. How far can a rod like that, on average, cast?

Would it be limited to streams?

Thanks

Let me think ... 9ft, 8wt ... good for some saltwater fly fishing, possibly tarpon? or 7' 6", 5wt ... 5wt is a little unusual for a rod of that length.

Does it have to go in the pannier? Could a more 'reasonable' rod - 9', 5 or 6wt, four piece not be strapped to the top of a pannier?

Lighthouse - I'm funny, but I don't like having things outside my panniers. I like everything inside, so I can just take the bags off when I need to. Also, I forgot to mention that this is a push bike, so anything over about 55 cm is starting to stick out too far.

Stickofdynamite - I'll pop over and have a look.

Thanks.

Hi Mate

I often strap a rod tube to the bar between the seat and front folks with velcro strips

"IF" it must fit in your paniers have a look at the Shakespeare Expedition XT they are cheap as chips, dam good rods my mate has the old 8.5' #5/6 im pretty sure its a 7 piece and comes in the shortest tube ive seen ! Once saw him land a 7lb rainbow on it too !

I see "all" the rods are now 7 piece, doubt you will get shorter ..................?

Thanks for that. I'll check it out.

Just out of interest, anyone know how far a 7.5ft rod will cast?

The length of your line + some backing, depending on your chuck-ability? reasonably average caster should get 20 yds, or so comfortably!
