Default Stream fishing

Hi - was after a bit of advice - looking for a stream rod say 8-8'6; 4-5 wt and was ideally going for the last model of greys streamflex - but missed some on ebay. Was wondering how the Greys x-flite in the same weight compares?..

I would have thought that 8ft 6" would be a bit big for streams (depending on your definition of a stream)

Hi O, welcome!

Can we ask for a picture of your 'stream'?

8 - 8'6'' is what I use on rivers.

You can use a rod that size on open sections of streams and some advocate longer rods on streams for bankside work / foliage bridging but not many. Find yourself in a tight spot and you're clattering branches.

PS

Here's a recent thread, similar but not same issue, although you'll get the gist why a pic helps:

What rod for highland stream brown trout fishing?

The debate goes on!! What rod for stream fishing??? Firstly! Lets look at the stream? How big or small is the stream? Rods? average size would be a 7ft.#3, weight rod! Although I'm sure Richard and a couple of other long rod users, will be along shortly to say I'm wrong??? I'm not!!! I us a 6ft, #2,weight rod on my stream and a cane 6ft.3in, #3, weight rod, and during the early part of the season, before the foliage becomes overgrown, I use a 7ft, #3, weight rod.

On a chalk stream with lots of room behind you for casting or wielding a long rod, I'd suggest you could go to 8ft, #2/3/4, weight rod. But if you have any tight spots on your stream? go 7ft, or even smaller!

Anyone know how to put the above quote in to a circle at the bottom of my posts?

Thanks guys, perhaps my description is a bit out, the photos on the thread are real streams. The river i am planning to fish is appx 5-15ft wide but does have tree canopy to various areas, so i get the point re shorter rods.

Is the comparison between streamflex and x-flite still useful or is there less choice in the 7ft rods under £100 (inc second hand)?

Ah, I'd say from what you said that an 8ft.6in, #4, rod would be what you need! Streamflex slightly softer action than the X-Flight, both very nice fly rods; and well worth the money. Also look at the GRXi, get one of the old ones if you can!

Just a thought! Maybe a 7ft.6in, #3/4 would suit your little river/stream?
