Default New to forum

Hello!

I'm an American who found this forum while "researching" Blob flies. I first learned of them via my fascination with Davie McPhails Youtube fly tying videos... Any way, they are an entirely new fly to me, and based on folks over here that I've spoken with, they represent a pattern reallly not used here. This makes me think it could be a "secret" weapon so to speak for those days when nothing works or as a seeking fly when looking for pod's of fish...

Though there seems to be some information in a variety of places (including here) I'm very curious how those of you that use them, do so?

Some of what I've seen looks like moderate to fast stripping is the way to go... but I'm wondering about using them in rivers and curious if any of you dead drift them, or fish them on the swing?

Seems to be MANY versions of the blob, and that it's rapidly become a "family" of flies versus a very specific pattern. That said, it seems yellow or hot orange are often the bases for other Blobs. What's your favorite color?

Ok, enough questions ! I appreciate any information you are able to provide.

Be well - and have a super weekend!

Will

They can be stripped, or hung under an indicator, and everything in between.
Welcome to the forum.

I am by no means an expert on blob fishing, especially not on rivers, but when stillwater fishing (mainly on reservoirs) I occasinally fish a blob as a dropper on a sinking line with a booby on the point. Think this is a fairly standard apprach with the booby helping to keep the line at the correct depth for longer during the retrieve. Also use glodhead blobs on floating lines as a point for a nymph rig, seem to work great as an attractor.

You will prob find that not many people use them on the rivers over here, lure fishing the flowing water is not as popular as in America.

Hi willki and welcome to to forum.
I tried the blob in a few colours one day on the San Juan River in New Mexico, the water is very clear so I could watch the fish. The blob scared them, the only "fly" that I have ever seen do that on that river. This is a river where you usually have a dozen nice trout right at your feet waiting for something to be kicked up. I have not tried it on lakes or any other situation so I can not speak to that, I would say it should work somewhere, I might try it in the lakes next trip.
Best of luck to you, let us know how you get on with it.

welcome to the forum
on reservoirs i normally only use blobs when the fish are feeding hard on daphnia(red orange and green seem to work). The shape of the blob seems to have evolved to fit in with international rules comps. If using them for pleasure fishing i often use a longer marabu tail for more movement

hope this helps Nick

Welcome to the forum Will.

I have fished in N.America a few times and shared blobs with one of my pals there but they have not been a great success. We did get some interest on deep fished boobies (green/white mainly) in a lake in N. California earlier this year but so far nothing to the orange blob and we were fishing a stocked fishery so I expected to catch on them.

Good luck with it.

Default Blobs

Hi Will, Welcome to the Forum,
The Blob is desighned to represent Daphnia congreegated together.
When you catch a fish you will notice a slime like substance in the trouts mouth, Take note of the colour for it is this colour of Blob that will be effective at that certain time.month.
Cheers

Well that makes sense now. My limited understanding of Daphnia is that they prefer still waters with algae as primary food source.
Thanks for that.
