Default Vancouver Island

Off to Vancouver on the 23rd of August. Got five days or so set aside for Vancouver Island before I fly to Sacramento and work by way down to Los Angeles.

Reasonably up to speed on California as I have fished there before

However, if anyone can recommend good places to fish at this time of year in Vancouver Island, guides, useful books, place to stay, etc., I would greatly appreciate it.

Many thanks

I very good friend of mine has been guiding on Vancouver Island and throughout British Columbia, if you drop him a mail at yos@chromersportfishing.com he should be able to help you or at least point you in the right direction. He's top class guide and a very nice fella.

Tag,

Erhrm, Vancouver Island is about the same size as England, Perhaps you may want to be a little more specific where you want to fish.

If you are flying into Vancouver which I guess you are - you will need to take a ferry over to the Island, (this is where you need to decide where you want to fish)

If you take the ferry over to Victoria for example - you may consider the South Island and places like Sooke - Port Renfrew where I was last weekend, and got this fish.

The options for river fishing are a little limited and you would be best fishing off a boat.

If you take the ferry from say horseshoe bay to Nanaimo and then head towards Campbell river, you probably have some of the finest river fishing you will ever see, The Cambell, is a mighty salmon river - Its tributary the Quinson is a fantastic fishery as well and you can get all the five species in a stream no wider than say 20 meters. At Courtney you have the Puntledge - here the fishing is awesome with every species in the river, and between these three rivers (about 50 miles apart) you should have awesome fishing.

As to Guides - let me know where you want to go and I should be able to find someone to help you - If you are still on the mainland on the weekend of the 25 / 26 th I would be happy to take you out to one the rivers and give you a hand to get going - I will be in Utah the whole of next week and California the week after so unfortunately I can only fish with you on the week ends.

Fred,
There are springs in both, the pinks are making their way up slowly at the moment - but there seems to be shortage of sockeye this year.

How are things down in your neck of the woods?

All the best
Mike

Hi Mike,
Fishing (Summer runs) has FINALLY gotten out of low gear, fish counts over Gold Rae dam 'jumped' considerably the last week in July/first week in August, with only a small number in the Hatchery. That said, it appears the Spring King run is not going to be good number wise (12,000'ish at this point, should be twice that number).

But if the Summie numbers continue to climb (late August-early October) could be excellent. Water flows are still in the 1800 cfs range so a bit high for fly fishing in some areas, but not enough (water continues to be gin clear) that it impacts 'the chase.' When the flows are cut back this tends to concentrate the fish so 'find one and you've probably found a lot.'

Fred
