Default Little advice needed please

Im going fishing on Saturday and im going to try fishing two flies for the first time, usually i just go with one as im not too confident with droppers and what flies to use etc. Im planning on using some form of goldhead to get down to the bottom as i figured early season the fish will still be near the bottom and use a short dropper (maybe 1 ft) with a foam arsed blob, will the fab just bob around a foot of the bottom as i imagine and be quite an effective method or not? Any help will be greatly recieved

p.s....im fishing with my best mate so bragging rights are of the utmost importance

You'll find that the foam will probably counteract the sinking properties of the goldhead so you won't get anywhere near the bottom!

1 foot seems like a recipe for disaster fort tangles - I would suggest 3 foot minimum between flies.

For fly choices I would go with a normal blob rather than the FAB.

I guess you are fishing a Loch rather than a river.........I fish rivers with the odd foray into a stillwater, using the same method.

Your tactic sounds good - I fish a goldhead on the point, plus a spider pattern on the dropper, works very well for me.

I use a leader about the length of the rod, and tie the dropper (3 turn water knot) about 3 feet from the top of the leader. I would not fish any longer dropper than a foot (6 inches better?) as you will tangle and get wind knots. I also find fluorocarbon seems worse for tangling when dropper fishing.

When you cast, you can vary the depth by how long you wait till you retrieve. If it is cold and deep you may need a sinktip.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys, had'nt thought about the fab stopping the golhead sinking properly, like i say im not used to fishing with more than 1 flea, maybe i should try something like a diawl bach on the dropper instead? Or like you say a normal blob instead of the foam type. I have a DI-5 line which i thought of using to get to the bottom of the loch quicker, am i right in thinking that the fish will probably be quite lethargic and near the bottom at this time of year so a slow retrieve would be best to try first?

Hi, Dont be to quick to asume the fish will be at the bottom of lake/loch/river bed, With this nice weather we have had the last few days ive been out there has been alot of activitiy at the surface, Fishing a floating line with a little emerger on the point and a small nymph on the dropper fishing just in the surface film has produced alot more fish than going down deep.obviously you will have to see on the day and adapt your tactitc to the conditions but just thought id say my bit so you can be prepared to chop and ur change ur taticts to suit the conditions not just be in a mind set to go deep. If your starting off with a dropper for the first time i would recommend using a heavier fly on the point to aid with turn over, As stated above i would leave about 3 foot between dropper and point but as they each to their own, if you ve got the hang of using one fly im sure you ll be ok

You're getting round to a more sensible approach now Muzza. Gold bead GRHE on the point and a diawl bach on a 6" dropper 3' above sounds like a good starting gambit to me. Count it down to 10 and a slow figure of eight retrieve right up to the bank fanning round from your casting position then same again with a count of 15 and so on. As slow a retrieve as poss or have the patience for and don't forget the water close to the bank. Blobs? No thanks. ATB, Alan. Let us know how you get on.
