Default Float tubing in Tarns...??

Hi guys..

About once a year i make a trip up to the lake district and fish some of the highland tarns, and since my last trip i've started thinking whether fishing from a float tube might be a bit more productive. It sounds really risky, most of the time being in the middle of nowhere, but i'm super hot in making sure safety comes first and this year i've got a buddy coming along as well.

Does anyone know whether this is allowed? I will be fishing mostly tarns where all you need is an environmental rod license and after that, no fee.

At the moment its just a thought in my head but if i went ahead with it, it would be a tube where you sit above the water and i would kit myself out with life jackets and stuff.. I've heard that Watandlath allow float tubing, but this is a stocked fishery. Purely interested in the wild tarns..

Anyone...???

Thanks
D

Personally, I doubt it would go down very well at all, regardless of whether it is practically possible or not. Casting a line with an artificial fly may well be intrusion enough on these delicate environs of the upland fells.
Goes alongside 4x4 green laning etc.

No worries.

It was just a thought. If its gonna raise eyebrows i'd rather not do it.

Are you seriously comparing the use of a 4X4 to that of a float tube

Seriously the comparison between the two could hardly be farther apart, I'd say it's like comparing an Elephant to a bird. If you hadn't seen me on the water tubing you would not know I'd been there, could the same be said for 4X4 green laning???????

Have to agree. What damage can you do with a float tube? As long as you stick to trails getting there and don't leave any litter including line and flies you won't be damaging the ecosystem.

Unless you stick a 4hp seagull on the back

Got to be a bit of a trek with a float tube on your back to a tarn and back.

Get the tube on your back and head for the hills, man! As long as you're behaving in a safety conscious and responsible way, what harm are you doing? Tell someone where you're going, what you're up to and when you expect to be back. Wear an FD. On the (extraordinarily) rare occasions I've encountered Ranger danger; twice the blokes have just wanted to have a look at the tube and a have chuckle at me, and once there was clearly a problem with my presence, but I just couldn't seem to get the tube near enough to the bank to hear what heinous charges were being levelled against me, and since the Ranger danger took its red faced-huffing away back down the hill in its 4x4 after half an hour, I can only conclude that it wasn't that big a deal, whatever it was

Tubing rules, and that cliche about the fishing being better where you're not supposed to go, is true I say go for it!

Its amazing some of the ingenious ways people justify not allowing tubing. Usually it is the default cry to oppose anything you don't like - elf an' safety. Ironically in many cases its safer than a boat, especially when you see numpties on most fisheries standing up in boats, not wearing life jackets, using excessive speed on outboards around obstructions etc. Pretty hard to fall out of a float tube and crack your head?!

Carrying parasites is another classic...why would it be any different than using a landing net or waders (esp felt soled)?

Damaging an ecosystem?...that is the biggest load of guff yet...would love to hear the logic

Basically its because it new and the old duffers don't like to deviate from traditional methods and condemn them without even attempting to understand it....In other cases its people seeing others having too much fun and feeling jealous.

It's funny isn't it? There's a real "can't do!" attitude to tubing that seems to be becoming entrenched in the psyche, as far as owners of land and fishing rights are concerned. I find it best to just calmly, politely and confidently proceed on the basis that when it comes to issues of personal safety and environmental protection; I'm right, they're wrong, and if they want to argue the toss, it'll have to wait until I'm done fishing
