Default Fishing Near Bristol

Hi Folks, I am new to the forum so nice to meet you all!

I am looking for some local knowledge.

I am a fairly new convert to fishing the fly and am trying to get out as much as I can and expand my knowledge/skill base.

I live half the time in South Devon on the coast and half the time in Clifton, Bristol where my girl friend lives.

At the moment I only tend to fish a few 'Stockies' (..think thats the correct terminologies) near my home in Devon.

I would like to find some places local to my Bristol location where I could nip off to while the Mrs is at uni. Preferably within 1/2 ish drive.

I don't really want big reserviours where I need to hire a boat, though I would fish a river if there was any chance of me (being a novice) of catching something, I suppose a lake in a nice setting is what I am really after.

Recommendations much appreciated!

Cheers,
Tom

Welcome to the forum, Tom. I'm sure somebody will be along shortly to answer your question. There was a post last year about river fishing in the area, that you could have a look at while your are waiting.

Fishing around Bristol?

Hope you find what you are looking for.

Bill

I suppose chew and blagdon are the obvious ones -both are very fishable from the bank especially at this time of year. The barrow tanks are also very good from the bank but i dont know them so well .Another option is Knowle angling-has small lakes and rivers but is membership club(reasonable price)

hope this helps -post if you need any more info

Nick

Default Bristol Waters

www.bristolwaters.co.uk/fishing would be a good port of call.Pop along to the Lodge at Chew Valley and pick up "The Buzzer" which is their magazine. This will give you a good insight to all their fisheries. You would do well to join the Bristol Reservoir Fly Fishers Association for what it costs which way understates what it offers to a fly fisher wishing to learn fast.Google up pieces by John Horsey and Martin Cottis for really helpful tips on how to fish Bristol Waters. You mentioned a nice setting well Blagdon is stunning in my book and fishing well as we speak.Google up Blagdon Lake which has its own very informative site.Good luck.

Best JP

Chew and Blagdon as mentioned are two of the top waters in the country and well worth a visit.

Welcome to the forum.

Barrow tanks, as in my Avatar, are just a 20 minute drive from Clifton. Bank fishing only on three ressies 60, 50, and 40 acres in size. I started out there three seasons ago and still love the place. £14.50 for an 8 fish bag, or catch and release. Fantastic sport on nymph or dries when conditions are right.

There's always a chance of catching one of these.

Let me know if you want showing around.

Hi Tony, & welcome along to both the forum & Bristol. As well as the ones mentioned already, there is a wealth of fly fishing within an hour or so from Clifton, some of the finest waters in the country in fact.

If you get a chance, go into Veal's & speak to either Steve Wedlake or Dave England who, during the week; run the fly department there. They are in constant touch with people who fish many of the waters, as well as being fanatics themselves. Veal's is 0117 9260790 ext 3.

As an ex-Bristolian, now living in exile in the midlands, I can only echo previous posts- give the Barrows a try. It's where I started my flyfishing career more years ago than I care to remember.. Great bank fishing at silly money. Veals is also my first port of call when I drop in to see the aged parents, the only real flyshop in the area that I am aware of. When you feel confident move on to Chew and Blagdon-still some of the best flyfishing anywhere in the country, and the guys in the shop at Woodford lodge are always helpful.
