Default First Tiem Fishing River Almond (Lothian)

Time*

Headed out to River Almond at around 2:30, started out to be a nice sunny day, slolwy became overcast and cold. I started spinning near the Swan Island and Wall Pool but could not see where i was wading and could'nt find a decent Wading Stick, so i gave up the spinning. I walked up the river for an hour and arrived at the Folley Runs. Started of with a Pheasant Tail Nymph Flashback - nothing. Decided to go for a Greenwells, still nothing, by this time i was getting cold. I then switched to a Hares Ear but nothing. Never the less its a good secluded River with some seriously promising spots. A question to other Almond Fisher's - The large slow pool, before the waterfall and salmon lader at the school brae, what is the fishing like there? I spotted about 6 ducks around that area. Also what runs prove well for begginer after brown trout?

Thanks.

Its only good for spey casting practice....sand and silt bottom. Salmon and Sea trout whiz through it.I cant recall brownies of any note ever being reported from that 300 yd section. I take it you mean the one after the cliff steps heading down river.
There were few bods out yesterday morning, still a bit cold and clarity not ideal.I think it is still a tad cold and early even the experienced guys struggled yesterday. When the river is dropping from a spate and its that colour at this time of year a size 8 sea trout fly might have been a better choice on a slow sink poly.We were out in the morning and that was our chosen tactic we thought it was a tad coloured for the small flees. But you are doing the right thing getting out and asking the questions as you say you are a beginner and these things will come in time.
Give me a shout next time your going down and I will show you what bits I would fish.Your flies were right.... just the conditions were not, just have to find a "stick" as there are some deep holes and its a notoriously difficult river to wade. I take it you were the lad who had a chat with the F.D.S.B bailiff yesterday.
Have you got the issue sorted with the C.A.C members forum yet? If not send me a P.M

Had some stonking sea trout and salmon out of that run, but later in season, june onwards, also caught a 3lb brook trout there too!
was escapee from somewhere.
Very few brownies down stream of weir.
Better upstream Peggies mill back to Almondell.

Do you mean the "car park pool" Bert.If so i agree the best Seatrout/Salmon run on the C.A.C section of the river.
I still maintain "Lower steps" is a casting practice pool.
I think your Brookie came from Stevies place here is an escapee rainbow

Yes that's the stretch i am talking about the sandy one. I will update my gear and get some poly leaders and some size 8's then. Yes i spoke to a guy called Calum on Friday. I will send you a PM before i head down next it might not be in a while as i have comitments at school etc. I get of the 41 at the School Brae. I have not been accepted on the CAC forum yet, i received this message via email :

" Your account is currently inactive, the administrator of the board willneed to activate it before you can log in. You will receive another e-mailwhen this has occurred. "

Cheers,

Oscar

I gathered that.. I have now corrected previous post for clarity thanks for pointing it out. I just pulled the first pic. of a non indigenous fish I could find that came out the river.
We had rainbows, blues, brooks, golden, tiger and browns swimming about the place.

I went to fish the almond on sat at bit in west calder (havn`t been there since i was little). I put a weighted swim feeder on and fished the bottom for a bit.(no luck) So i then tried a wee black and red spinner i had and managed to catch few brownies just under lb mark.

Does any1 know deep pools where i can bait fish bottom for trout?
