Default Lake District day ticket rivers near Ambleside, advice please

I am spending a few days in the Lake District next week with the wife and kids. We have a few walks planned a bit of a bike ride in grizdale and plenty of cakes in the tea rooms. Hopefully I will also be able to sneak in a couple of evenings fishing. I have searched the forum and www.lakedistrictfishing.net seems to be the popular recommendation. As I only fish small rivers at home, mainly the River Dove at Milldale, all my tackle and knowledge is geared around it, (short rods, small reels and 3/4 wt lines) for this reason i would say that probably all of the still water is out of the question, correct???
So I have looked through the above site and they appear to have access to two small rivers, The Rothay and The Brathay, both close to where we are stopping just outside Ambleside. By the looks of it you can by a day ticket from a number of places for only £8, a bargin.

Has anyone fished either of them, any good? I'm not after dozens of record breaking fish !!!

Anywhere else near Ambleside worth considering??

Thanks in advance,

Phil

Default Lake district rivers

Hi Phil
I would not bother with either of the WADDA rivers but try instead the river Kent - tickets from Carlson's tackle shop in Kendal or better still go to the river Eden in Kirkby Stephen or Appleby - a bit more of a journey but would be worth it.
look at
http://www.kirkbystephen.net/
and
http://www.kirkbystephen.net/blog/ This is the best info you can get updated EVERY morning giving you the real river conditions.
and
http://www.applebyangling.co.uk/

KS is possibly the best value river fishing in the North of England, provided you want "proper" fishing for wild fish not stockies. It hasn't been stocked for about 4 years. Good brown trout with a few Grayling for good measure.

Or you could head a bit North and fish the Derwent or Greta at Keswick (tickets available at Keswick Tourist Information). Also take a look at Penrith Anglers. They have a website.

Plenty for the family to do whilst you fish.

The Ehen which runs out of Ennerdale would be perfect for your style and tackle.

Hi,

I can't remember the club but tickets are available [about a tenner] from the Post Office at Cleator Moor.

Penrith Angling association has some very good water. They have a website.

I plan to fish the Eamont where it flows into the top of Ullswater this weekend

Just change the direction of your cast - not a big problem!
